Choose a hard drive by the job it will do before you choose a capacity. Desktop and external drives (Seagate BarraCuda, WD Blue, Toshiba Canvio) suit one PC or a backup disk used a few hours a day. NAS drives (IronWolf and IronWolf Pro, WD Red Plus and Red Pro, Toshiba N300) are built to run around the clock in a multi-bay enclosure. Surveillance drives (SkyHawk, WD Purple, Toshiba S300) are tuned for constant writing from cameras. Enterprise drives (Seagate Exos, WD Gold and Ultrastar, Toshiba MG series) belong in servers and large arrays. Ready-made external drives (Seagate One Touch and Expansion, WD Elements and My Passport, Toshiba Canvio) cover portable backup.
The recording method matters more than most buyers expect. CMR drives write tracks side by side. SMR drives overlap tracks to fit more data on each platter, which suits write-once archives but slows down under sustained writes, and a RAID rebuild is where you feel it. Seagate publishes a list of its CMR and SMR drives, and the same check applies to any brand. For RAID 5, 6 and 10 we recommend CMR drives only. WD Red Plus and Red Pro are CMR, and so are IronWolf Pro and Toshiba N300.
For capacity, work from the array rather than the single drive. Eight bays of 12TB drives in RAID 6 give about 72TB usable before filesystem overhead. Bigger drives lower the cost per terabyte and the number of bays you need, and helium-sealed models above roughly 12TB run cooler and quieter in dense racks, but they take longer to rebuild after a failure, so above roughly 12TB we suggest two-drive protection (RAID 6, or SHR-2 on Synology). The factors that actually decide the spec — not the marketing matrix.
Desktop drives for a single PC. NAS drives for 24/7 operation in a multi-bay enclosure. Surveillance drives for constant camera writes, and AI-tuned lines such as SkyHawk AI when the recorder runs analytics. Enterprise drives for servers and large arrays. Putting a desktop drive in a NAS or NVR is the most common cause of early failures we are asked about.
SMR (shingled) drives stall on sustained writes and stretch RAID rebuild times. Specify CMR on every RAID 5, 6 or 10 quote and check the vendor's CMR and SMR list. Keep SMR for single-user backup or cold archive.
Count the bays, pick the RAID level, then work out usable space. Larger drives rebuild slower, so move to two-drive protection above roughly 12TB. Buy the same model across the array so speed and firmware match.
Warranty on drives bought through us is handled by our Bur Dubai office, so you deal with one supplier instead of a brand call centre. Keep the drive serial numbers with the invoice.

For eight bays, use CMR drives rated for multi-bay NAS: Seagate IronWolf Pro, WD Red Pro or Toshiba N300 Pro. All three are 7200 RPM with a 5-year warranty. Pick on price per terabyte and stock at the time of quote rather than on brand. Avoid the base WD Red, which was sold with SMR.
Yes, if the cameras record around the clock. Desktop drives are not tuned for constant writing and tend to fail early. Seagate SkyHawk, WD Purple or Toshiba S300 are the right class, and the AI-tuned versions suit recorders that run video analytics.
CMR writes tracks side by side. SMR overlaps them to store more per platter. SMR is fine for archives and backups written once, but it slows under sustained writes and lengthens RAID rebuilds. Use CMR for RAID arrays.

It works, but we advise against it inside one array. Mixed models differ in speed, firmware and warranty, which makes rebuilds and claims harder. Different brands in separate arrays are fine.
